Safety Tips to Observe When Fumigating your Home or Office

4 years, 5 months

Dealing with insects like cockroaches, ants, termites, fleas, spiders, bedbugs, and even rodents, either at home or place of work, can truly make your life hectic – these unwanted insects and animals can be a nuisance. Even worse, is when you opt to decontaminate the space yourself; you put yourself and those around you at risk. Once exposed to fumigators, you could start experiencing serious health complications; problems you did not have before. Constant exposure can cause your body organs to malfunction, or even death. As simple as it may look, a fumigation procedure is hazardous; the chemicals used in a fumigation procedure are a health hazard.
This article discusses various safety tips to observe when disinfecting your home, office, or warehouse.

Preparation phase
Before you begin to fumigate a specific space, there are some necessary steps to undertake. How you approach the procedure will depend on the premises you are fumigating. Essentially, different premises will require different disinfectants. For instance, if you are fumigating a hospital or home, you may require a special chemical, different from that used in a warehouse or supermarket procedure.
Some of the things you can do as a way to prepare include:
• Keep stuff like food, beverages, medications, and dental products in sealed containers or bags. If your freezer or refrigerator has food, beverages, and stuff like ice, empty it.
• Before the procedure begins, make sure no people or pets are around.
• Open up the drawers, cupboards, lockers, cabinets, and closet doors.
• Shut down all AC units and cut off your gas supply if there is one installed.
• Learn more about the chemicals you plan to use during the fumigation process. This should keep you alert on the best approach to observe as well as the contamination signs to expect if exposed.

During the fumigation
During the job, always wear protective. Inhaling or exposing your skin to the fumigants puts your health at risk. Some protective clothing you should consider wearing during the procedure includes goggles, face masks, boots, overalls, and so on.

Do not do the job alone
A fumigation job involves the release of toxic fumes and chemicals. If you get exposed to the harmful chemicals and fall sick while on the job, but you are alone, there will be no one around to take care of you. At least, if you are two or three people, you can take care of one another, and even get the job done faster. Consider this regardless of the size of space you are fumigating, whether big or small.
Put up Warning signs if necessary
Once an area has been treated, keep unauthorized people away from the premises. If the premise is an industry, warehouse or other places of work, put up warning signs that clearly show the type of chemical used and the treatment date.

After the Fumigation phase
Once an area has been treated, keep it ventilated for at least 24 hours. You can leave it for up to 48 hours. Depending on the type of space you are fumigating, you may have to call in an expert to measure the threshold limit (i.e. the concentration level) of the chemicals used. Also, this specialist should recommend if it is safe to go back to the fumigated environment.
Lastly, be on the look-out for after-exposure symptoms. If you notice either of these symptoms, seek medical attention right away. This can be symptoms like breathing difficulties, blurred vision, dizziness, nausea, splitting headaches, stomach pains, and so on.

Call in a professional
Sneaky insects and pests are hard to control, particularly if you live or run a business in an environment infested by them. Even though homeowners and some business owners are not willing to admit it, pests’ eradication is not always a simple job. If not properly done, it may end costing you more than you anticipated, despite you trying to make it a DIY project.

Tips: How to Clean Your Carpet without Breaking Your Bank
Cleaning your carpet should not be a hard task. However, doing it regularly can feel like the hardest task in the world, particularly if tied down by tight schedules. You could have kids in the house who always leave the carpets stained with crayon marks, ketchup stains, ice-cream stains, or ink stains. Sometimes, it not the kids who make a mess – it is the adults when they spill beverages like coffee, wine, or juice. If you have pets in the house, getting rid of the odor or fur is something you want to frequently. Even if you are not removing stains or bad odors, dust and dirt will still build up on the carpet with time. That means your carpets needs care every now, and then.
In the 21st Century, one has to budget for everything; that means hiring a professional carpet cleaner is not always an option. Sometimes, you have to sacrifice that money to take care of another need or luxury: it could be school fees, a hospital emergency, or even treating yourself at a refreshing retreat (hey, life is short!).
Here are various ways you can clean your carpet; you probably will not spend a lot on these methods but you sure have to get down and do some work.

Removing Stains on carpets
If a stain gets to a carpet, it is best to act on it fast before the carpet fibers absorb it. You can use the following mixtures to clean the stains.
• Using water. Water will get rid of some stains like blood. Soak a piece of cloth in water, and then use it to mop up the stain – be easy when doing it so you don’t damage the carpet. To dry the wet area, use clean paper towels.
• Using club soda. Club soda also works like a charm, especially on stains caused by juice, coffee, and wine spills. Just like above, pour a little amount of club soda on the stain; using a dry cloth, blot the stain. Again, make sure not to scrub too hard.
• Milk and cornstarch paste. A small amount of paste made by mixing milk and cornstarch will work well on stains like that from ink. Apply a small paste on the stain but in this case, use a toothbrush to gently scrub it off.
• Water and white vinegar. A vinegar solution probably tops the list of the best homemade cleaning solutions. It will work on almost any kind of stain, including food spills, drink spills, muddy footprints, or messes made by pets.
Removing Odor removal
If you have pets, you do not want your house smelling like a pigpen, even though you are not rearing any pigs. You can use the following home-made solutions:
• Water and vinegar. To keep your carpets odorless, a mixture of water and vinegar will do the trick. You just need to mix white vinegar (not colored vinegar) with water in the ratio of 1:1. Spray this mixture on the stain or use a towel soaked in this mixture; then, use a dry cloth to sponge up the wet area.
• Baking soda. If your carpet stinks, but you do not want to call in a professional carpet cleaner, use baking soda to eliminate the odor. Dust the carpet with baking soda, then leave it overnight – next, vacuum your carpet the following morning. Also, you can use this method to clean a small spot that’s smelly.
Vacuuming the carpet
To keep your carpets clean, vacuuming is the way to go. However, you need to invest in a high-ticket vacuum cleaner, which will certainly cost you a couple of thousands, Kenyan money.
When to call in a specialist
If maintaining your carpets seems like a too hard job to do, especially vacuuming the rugs repeatedly, perhaps you should consider hiring a professional carpet cleaner.
